    BFA vs AA
Starting fall I will be starting the Academy of Art in San Francisco, and will start my course to get my BFA in graphic design, but was wondering about the AA degree. Is it worth the extra schooling to get the BFA, when in the "Real World" will an AA be looked down upon? Any other thoughts/comments on an AA vs a BFA?

    Thanks = )

    Lunch, Liberty
Body and mind feeling rather run-down this week. I'm not certain whether it's the miserably damp and misty weather, the lack of substantive work at my dayjob (worsened by my boss's absence the rest of the week), the lack of feedback at my freelance job, the fact my body continues to bleed and bleed and bleed despite triple dosages of hormones, or all of the above.

On the bright side, it occurred to me that I have a very awesome and very strong ally at PB. After weeks of reschedules, I finally managed to stop by for lunch and whatnot. We started off talking business, since she's the driving force in RP hiring me for copyright research, and, having done that, I feel much, much better.

She pretty much confirmed that my invoice is very reasonable, and that, yes, the editor with whom I work is—how shall I say?—flighty? inattentive? lazy? very, very busy? So in other words, after sitting for two, three weeks and waiting for feedback, my instinct to email an invoice and ask for guidance is both natural and a good one. And with my ally as my, well, ally...I know I won't get burned. Phew!

    Pimp My Vampire Will Return
Swamped with work this week. Fear not, I have a half finished file of the Circle of the Crone to post here, and then we'll get a post for the Invictus, the Lancea Sanctum and Ordo Dracul will share a post, then the Unaligned vampires. Then probably a post or two of general pimpage and development.

Hopefully I'll have time to post the Circle tomorrow night. Just wanted to let everyone know I haven't dropped the series.

RE: ABNEY PARK - STEAMPUNK PICNIC!

Ahoy all you, Steampunk Chaps & Chapettes,

Been reading this Steampunk Fashion Extravaganza for some time now and to be fair thought that is was about time I posted something.

I live aboard my boat, in London and the South of France.  However, whenever I am moored in London, I love visiting, Abney Park Cemetery and Arboretum, (now you know where the band took there name after), I moor in Limehouse marina so it is not more that a quick subterranean train ride away and it is so wonderfully Steampunk, well they would never have named a Steampunk Band after if if it was'nt (Huzzah).

However I have always longed to have a Steampunk Sunday afternoon picknick and photoshoot there, but have never got around to it, so I was wondering if there are any of you London based Steampunk phanatics who would like to try and set an event like this up, you know lots of jolly old pork pies and ham sandwiches
    and lashings of Ginger Beer.

If there are any like minded people out would you mind awfully getting in contact with me at: nemo@itbloke.net so we can try and set it up.

Thanks for you time in this matter I really do look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to give it a go,

Kind Regards & Toodle Pip for Now, Chaps and Chapettes,

    Dark Matter: Actual Play
    Setting and Character Session

The process of creating this game started from scratch over coffee with [info]nina_in_nz. I hadn't gamed with her before, so I wanted to know what sort of games she was interested in playing. Conversely, [info]surrealfish is one of my oldest gaming friends (I've been roleplaying with him since I caught him and [info]xyphoid playing The Temple of Elemental Evil in the StAC library in 1991) so I already had a good idea of the kinds of things which would fly with him. At this point the game was "some sort of sci-fi" and I was going to read my new Shadowrun 4e rules. I decided that would be too much in the way of system and setting for a three to four session game.

Round two was an email in which I solicited input about the sort of game and the sort of setting both players wanted:
What would you like to do in the game?
What do you find interesting or cool about sci fi?
How far in the future would you like to go?
Are there any setting elements from other genres you'd like to see?
How would you describe the kind of game you'd like to play (You are __(characters)__ who __(do what)__ in __(setting)__)?

Their answers were pretty much on the same page, and with two players this wasn't a particularly arduous process! So I collated their responses, made a few notes of questions to be discussed in person, added a few tweaks of my own and decided on a system.

Yesterday was the first session with all three of us together. I went through my notes (although I should have printed them out as well) asking questions, discussing various aspects of the setting that we were unclear about, presenting various setting elements and explaining elements of the rules as I went. After an initial pass through, we made characters (with 10 advances rather than the 5 for starting characters), answered a few more setting questions, designed the ship and briefly discussed the starting system.

This morning I flavoured and expanded my notes. I'm excited about the collaborative setting and the set-up and I hope [info]nina_in_nz and [info]surrealfish can see their ideas amongst the material.

    Dark Matter: Set-up

    Smuggling on the Fringe

    The Brief:
The players are criminals, mercenaries, oddjobbers, refugees, dissidents and explorers who, by choice or necessity, exist on the fringes where central control has devolved to local powers of various sizes. They do jobs of varying legality, try to keep their morals, and uncover secrets about the true nature of the universe, its history, and their place in it.

    There's No Place Like Home

The Mazerolles system lies in the wide Pause-Imperial fringe zone between Imperial space and The Pause Authority. The nearest Imperial system, al-Beidh, is six wormhole jumps away. Mazerolles is an F class star (whiter and hotter than Earth’s sun) with five planets. )

    Dark Matter: Setting material

    A Disintegrating Galaxy

Earth’s galactic empire is splintering under the pressure of internal tensions and external forces. Opportunistic system- and sector-level government structures are breaking away, dissident movements are seizing planets and outposts. Imperial military forces resist in some sectors, collude in others and elsewhere instigate. At the core, the imperial courtiers continue their petty bickering amidst pomp and excess, the escalating price of imported wine provoking only changes in personal and house status. While their masters play, the various arms of the imperial bureaucracy struggle to maintain their own integrity and power. )

    Snickers

    Snickers

Above: regular Snickers trade dress. Below: Wal-Mart’s Soviet-style Snickers

My son recently alerted me to a stark new wrapper for Snickers that he found at a Wal-Mart in Tulsa. Not a full-fledged Snicker redesign, I don’t think. Apparently this version of Snickers is a Wal-Mart exclusive. Strikes a lot of people as sort of Soviet-looking. Any product with a single star has a way of doing that, intentionally or not. (See my post on Sappora beer.)

I'm thinking that what was intended here was maybe nothing more than a sort supplier’s homage to the single star in the old Wal-Mart logo. (Needless to say, the new Snickers bar wouldn’t look so Soviet if they had used the new Wal-Mart starburst symbol.)

Does anyone know the real story behind this pack?

    Steampunk Style Test

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

    The Explorer

    7% Elegant, 47% Technological, 30% Historical, 64% Adventurous and 41% Playful!

You are the Explorer, the embodiment of steampunk’s adventuring spirit. For you, clothing should be rugged and reliable, and just as functional as it is attractive. You probably prefer khaki or leather, and your accessories are as likely to include weapons as technological gizmos. You probably wear boots and gloves, and maybe a pith helmet. Most of what you wear is functional, and if you happen to wear goggles people had better believe that you use them. In addition to Victorian exploration gear, your outfit probably includes little knickknacks from your various travels. Above all, you are a charming blend of rugged Victorian daring and exotic curiosity.

    Very cool pieces.

I am currently making a necklace out of a smashed up watch, I found the above link while looking for bits and pieces online- but tell me, do any of you know where one might find sprockets and gears? I want to sew a bunch onto some corsetry, but I think watch bits are a little small for the desired effect.

    Two for the ladies :3
So, ladies, how do you like your hair?

I'm going to get mine cut on Tuesday... but I'm not sure what I want to do.
Mine is currently shoulder length, with weird layers in it (Still in recovery from a butchered hair cut.), and straight as a board.
Can anyone recommend some steamy (read as: Victorian) hair cuts?

Also, how do you like your makeup :3
Its something I haven't seen discussed too often. Do you think of some makeup styles as more 'steampunk' than others?

I'm pretty lax on the makeup factor. If I wear any at all, its generally a copper shadow, with a bit of liner and mascara. I'd just like to know your opinions on this :3

    Oh. *Quark*.
Those trouble ads I mentioned before? Well, before I went calling up the creators of those ads I checked out their ads from last year just to see what we had them do last time. Turns out we just had them give us EPS files.

My boss is gone for a week so it was up to me to call the production assistant working on this. I did. I did my best to sound friendly, mentioning what I was calling about - which she interrupted with a loud, "Uh huh". Ooohhhkay, so I cut to the chase, saying that the problems are persisting, and to sound humble I mentioned it must be a "Quark thing" (knowing she did the ads in InDesign) - to which she interjected, "Oh. Quark," as if we were discussing something highly unsavory, like roasting fecal matter. I continued, saying how it seemed we avoided these problems last year by using EPSs and could she send us EPS files instead? In a very bored, huffy tone she said, "Fine. I'll send them to you." And she hung up on me in the middle of my thank-you.

    WTF?

It's not like QuarkXPress is PageMaker or some archaic wannabe page layout program. Though it may be nearing the end of its road, Quark is STILL an industry standard and it works just fine and does the job well. Just because this chick is working for some hoity-toity design firm with 20 people, 5 creative directors and a single production assistant (her) doesn't make them any better than our small 2-person operation (which, might I ad, has won a few awards in its time).

In moving home I naively hoped to AVOID the design snobbery that has so heavily infiltrated many larger cities. I know I am responsible for my share of derision toward people who think a few afternoon classes and purchase of the Adobe Creative Suite makes them a designer, but you'd think that a firm, no matter WHAT their size, putting together a multi-page document seen all over the state might have SOME clue as to what they are doing. I know most of the visitor guides in our state are actually rather hideous but ours is pretty damn good for what it is. We KNOW it isn't on par with an Exxon annual report but that doesn't make it any less valid. Hell chica, YOU just designed 3 1/6th page ads - that really isn't much to hoot and holler about when you can't even embed fonts/outline fonts properly and are criminal of vast vector remnants that quintuple your file size. I was just trying to save you the trouble and embarrassment of having you clean up your ads by offering to accept EPS files instead. Geez.

Grr. Is it just me? Are EPSs just not *done*? Is Quark THAT hated? I am just trying to do my job and make it print properly - I don't need design snobbery on top of that.

Edit to clarify: I am not particularly on the Quark boat or anything - it's just what my boss uses. My point is that it shouldn't MATTER what layout program we're using and what she may think of it, there's no call for being rude to my face over it.

CROOKED LITTLE VEIN Reviewed At AICN

My editor just sent me a link to a review of CROOKED LITTLE VEIN at Ain’t It Cool News, coinciding with the paperback release.  AICN would be pretty much the last place I’d expect to get reviewed.  I haven’t read it yet, but, still, very nice of them to take the time, I thought…

As I woke up this morning it was with great terror that I found the cage door open and nothing inside of it. It seemed as someone had unscrewed the screws on the hinges, something that left me really confused. I rushed down and found my mother making breakfast; she knew nothing of my new pets so I tried to look as If nothing had happened.

She smiled at me, and said happily -Hi doll, you know what, I saw the strangest little things sitting on the leafs of the oak tree when I was fetching the mail. They were so neat, all shiny and golden, I wonder what they were, I have never seen them before. I shall ask your father when he gets home.
I almost choked on my orange juice, - Um, Ill have a quick look. I blurted and ran out of the kitchen. The oak tree was not really far from my house, just down a slope just by the river but I seemed as a small eternity to run down the little path.

I was so happy when I got there; there they were every one of the little critters, I would have imagined that they would be a bit harder to find, being only something like 0.6 inches big.
I really need to find a new cage for them, they seem to get smarter every day, and I thing that they are learning by watching me work in my workshop, since yesterday I replaced a old hinge on one of my cages, and today they had done the same work, except that they did not put the hinge back again.

Here are some pictures I snapped of the little bugs before I restored them to their cage (that now have a leather belt around it)

China's Olympic Mascots cater to young children
I'm not sure if this has been posted here, but I saw this in the morning paper and found it to be quite interesting!

Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace -- and good wishes from China -- to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals -- the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow -- and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name -- a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

When you put their names together -- Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni -- they say "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.

You can read the rest of the article here!

    --
As a fan of Asian pop art, I find them pretty cute and fun; however, they do have, as the Wallstreet journal calls it, an "alien" quality to them, and I'm not sure that children all over the world will find them as cuddly as China hopes.
